It’s National Preparedness Month! If you’ve been meaning to put together a 72 hour emergency kit or figure out what you’d do if a natural disaster happened where you live, September is the perfect month to buckle down and get it done.
Build a kit for National Preparedness Month
Packing a 72 hour emergency kit is one of the best things you can do to be ready. A good kit will have the tools, supplies, and information you need in one place. You’ll be able to respond quickly and efficiently to natural disasters, a shelter-in-place or evacuation order, or even a personal emergency.
Create your plan
National Preparedness Month is also a great time to create a personalized emergency response plan. It doesn’t have to be a 20 page list of bullet points and contingencies, either. Just start with the basics. These four questions can help you figure out a lot:
- What is the most likely natural disaster that could occur in my area?
- What would I need to do if it happened?
- Where would I prefer to go if I need to evacuate?
- What would I need to take with me?
Gather your emergency information
Making a binder with copies of all my important information was one of the best things I did to feel prepared and organized. September is the perfect month to put it on your to-do list! You’ll want to add things like financial documents, insurance policies, and bank information as well as your personal emergency contacts. Store everything in a fire bag or fire safe for extra peace of mind.
